Manchester United player ratings vs Sheffield United: Daniel James and David de Gea good

David de Gea

Was a one-man team in the first-half. Made three saves before Sheffield United eventually breached him. May be disappointed with the second. 6

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

He is a timid character and this was a timid performance. Wan-Bissaka seemed to be marooned in his third for the majority of the game. 4

Harry Maguire

Gave Lys Mousset too much room to curl the ball past De Gea for the second goal. Inspired United late on by bringing the ball forward more often. 6

Victor Lindelof

After an encouraging outing against Brighton, had another regressive afternoon in a season of regression. Could not bail United out.  5

Phil Jones

Pantomime season began early at Bramall Lane. Jones was an agent of chaos and United's defending was chaotic. Culpable for the goal. Substituted at half-time. 1

Brandon Williams

Targeted by Sheffield United and buckled quickly. Did not help having Jones next to him but that temperament Solskjaer says he has was absent. Booked again but scored a lovely goal. 5

Fred

Battled throughout even though he had little help. Lost Mousset  for the second goal but held United together for their onslaught. 5

Andreas Pereira

Against a reticent and steely side, he predictably reverted to type. Wasteful with the ball and weakly ceded possession for the second. Substituted. 2

Daniel James

For the majority, this was probably his worst performance since his full debut at Wolves. His decision-making was awry and lost his head at times. He kept his head to tee up Marcus Rashford. 7

Marcus Rashford

Petulant in the first-half. Threatened initially in the second but had no impact and just could not get going. Then he scored United's third. 7

Anthony Martial

Was the first to test back-up goalkeeper Simon Moore in the 29th minute. Was a useful figurehead while others did more damage. 6

Subs

Jesse Lingard

Brought thrust. 6

Mason Greenwood

Predatory goal. 7

Axel Tuanzebe

Shored things up. 5
