Man United player ratings vs Villarreal: Jadon Sancho and Fred good in victory

David de Gea

Made two very solid first-half stops but his second-half save from Trigueros was outstanding. Once again he's bailing out United managers. 8

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Looks devoid of confidence at the moment. Passing was average and twice caught in possession in dangerous areas as he took too long to get rid of the ball. 4

Victor Lindelof

Ball seemed to be attracted to him in the second half as Villarreal began to fling in a few crosses. Stood up well to the task and tried to play out from the back. 7

Harry Maguire

Much better than in recent weeks. Good on the ball and defended calmly and purposefully. A performance he badly needed. 7

Alex Telles

Caught out positionally a couple of times but much better going forward than Wan-Bissaka on the right. A couple of dangerous crosses but overhit some as well. 6

Fred

Had to play a new role, shuffling across to left midfield when United were out of possession. Got through a lot work and his pressing helped create Ronaldo's goal. 7

Scott McTominay

Tried to drive forward in possession and didn't always have many passing options. A solid and secure performance as a defensive midfielder. 7

Donny van de Beek

Lead the press in the first half and played a more advanced role in the second half, but as United retreated under pressure he drifted out of the game. 6

Anthony Martial

Slammed the ball to the turf in anger midway through the first half and it summed up his night. Cut a frustrated figure and was isolated at times. 4

Jadon Sancho

Playing more right midfield than right-wing, so not seen as an attacking force all that much. One excellent bit of link play with Fernandes when he should have scored but buried his second chance. A good night for him. 7

Cristiano Ronaldo

Put in a disciplined performance and played his part in a collective defensive effort, before turning up on the big occasion once again. A superb finish when the ball broke to him. 8

Subs

Bruno Fernandes

Injected some fizz into United's attacking play and they improved when he came on. 7

Marcus Rashford

Bright when he came on and offered more than Martial had in less than half the time. 6

Juan Mata

Late on. N/A

Manager

Made a bold selection decision in leaving out Fernandes. Not afraid to tinker during a game and improved United defensively. Came for a clean sheet and got it. 8
