Man United player ratings vs Aston Villa: David de Gea good but Nemanja Matic poor

David de Gea

Made two routine stops from Emiliano Buendia and Lucas Digne in the first-half and vigilantly denied Jacob Ramsey but his kicking put United under pressure. 7

Diogo Dalot

A decent first-half at right-back against the foraging Digne, who then skinned him early in the second and Villa constantly targeted Dalot. 4

Victor Lindelof

An improvement on his rusty performance against Villa on Monday night but then he went walkabout for the goals. 5

Raphael Varane

A class act again and nigh-on flawless with his defending while United were in front but was then swamped as Villa scored once and then twice. 7

Alex Telles

Anthony Elanga reduced Telles's workload in the final third but the Brazilian was still respectable and Villa had little joy against him. 6

Nemanja Matic

Provided balance that enabled Fred to roam further afield and press Villa. Booked for a cynical tackle and that compromised his effectiveness. 4

Fred

When United were good, Fred was good. When United had a bad spell, Fred had a bad spell. His advanced positioning enhanced the team and he assisted Fernandes' second. 6

Mason Greenwood

A constant threat and could have made it 2-0 but Emiliano Martinez rushed out to block his effort. Decision-making too often awry. 6

Bruno Fernandes

Fortunate to score his first Premier League goal in over a month but Fernandes was closer to his optimum again and linked up well in the left-hand channel and scored his second goal clinically. 8

Anthony Elanga

An impressive first significant league start down the left. His direct running pegged Villa back and United's attack was quicker with Elanga in it. 6

Edinson Cavani

Had few opportunities but worked hard, chasing back inside his own area and teammates should have played the ball to him more often. 5

Subs

Jadon Sancho

A disaster the moment he received the ball. 3

Donny van de Beek

Close to scoring. 6

Jesse Lingard

Couldn't impress. 5

Manager

The selection of Elanga injected energy and pace into the United attack and partnering Fred with Nemanja Matic paid off. The Sancho substitution did not. Remarkably, did not make another change. In-game management was poor. 4
