Manchester United player ratings: Aaron Wan-Bissaka keeps Raheem Sterling quiet as Bruno Fernandes stock soars

Manchester United earned bragging rights over Manchester City as they won the derby to complete a league double over their rivals for the first time in a decade.

James Robson was at Old Trafford to run the rule over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men...

David de Gea 7

A good save to deny Sterling after United suffered a nervous start. Good in the air when needed.

Victor Lindelof 7

Composed display to limit City to very few chances.

Harry Maguire 8

A couple of misjudgements to start with. After that he totally grew into the game and barely gave Aguero a kick.

Luke Shaw 8

Getting better and better every week. Caught dithering by Aguero early on, but after that won just about everything that came his way.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 9

An absolutely immense performance both defensively and going forward. Sterling couldn’t get any change out of him. Is there a better tackler in English football?

Nemanja Matic 7

His form was rewarded as Solskjaer picked him ahead of McTominay – and he justified that decision. Early tackle to deny Aguero typified his dominant display.

Bruno Fernandes 8

Has quickly become United’s talisman. Set up Martial’s goal with a wonderful piece of improvisation – and also set James clear for another golden chance.

Fred 7

Won so many balls in midfield to break up play and keep City on the back foot when United were at their best in the first half.

Brandon Williams 8

Managed to keep Foden quiet at the same time as frightening the life out of Cancelo. Brilliant performance.

Daniel James 7

Still makes the wrong decision too often, but frightened City with his pace and forced two saves from Ederson.

Anthony Martial 8

Brilliant goal to cap off a tireless performance that could and probably should have given him more. Another sign of how he’s grown this season.

Substitutes

  • Eric Bailly (Williams, 78), 6: Full-bloodied display when he came on – repelling everything in the air.
  • Scott McTominay (Martial, 78), 7: What a strike. Not quite a ‘Beckham’ – but it’s hard to remember Old Trafford erupting like this in a long time.
  • Odion Ighalo (Fernandes, 88), N/A: Did what was asked when he came on by throwing himself about City’s defence.
