Manchester United player gets new squad number ahead of possible debut

Manchester United's young centre-back Teden Mengi has been given a new squad number at the club.

Mengi will now wear No.43, as revealed by the photographs posted by United ahead of their Europa League last 16 second leg vs LASK, which will take place at Old Trafford on Wednesday night. Mengi was pictured with the number on his training kit.

It represents a promotion for the 18-year-old, who impressed throughout the 2019/20 campaign for United's Under-23s and for the Under-18s on their run to the FA Youth Cup semi-finals. Mengi previously had the No.71.

But after training on a regular basis with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first team, it seems Mengi is set for a more prominent first team role for the coming campaign.

Under-23s boss Neil Wood spoke to MEN Sport about Mengi earlier this season and tipped him to follow in Brandon Williams' footsteps into the first team.

"Teden has been fantastic," Wood said."He came up to us quite early on in the season and, a bit like Brandon in a sense, he came from the 18s and took his chance. He played really well and he kept his place in the team.

"And when he dropped back down at the end of the season to lead the Youth Cup team, he put in some excellent performances there. We'll be looking to work with him next season and he's one [player] we want to 'do a Brandon' with, push him on and the goal is to try and get him pushed up into that first team if we can."

It remains to be seen how much of a shake-up United's squad numbers will get this summer.

With the potential arrival of Jadon Sancho and departures for Alexis Sanchez and Chris Smalling, possibly among others, there could be some other major changes.
