Manchester United paid tribute to NHS workers battling the coronavirus pandemic at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Pictures that circulated on social media showed the exterior lights at the 'Theatre of Dreams' turned blue, with only the letters N, H and S from 'Manchester United' lit up in red on the side of the stadium.

The heartwarming gesture was well received by fans and former players alike, with Gary Neville tweeting: "Well done ⁦@ManUtd."

United have drawn plenty of praise for their response to the current crisis, with the club announcing last week a series of measures to support the health service including numerous donations from the Manchester United Foundation and a fleet of 16 vehicles to assist with NHS courier operations.

United have also donated medical equipment to local hospitals and are encouraging staff with reduced workloads to volunteer for the NHS or in their local communities.

Foundation coaches are working with the children of key workers, while other confirmed measures include placing Old Trafford on a reserve list as a possible temporary blood donation centre, food and drink donations and free car parking for NHS staff staying at the adjacent Hotel Football.

United striker Marcus Rashford - who has already raised £150,000 to ensure children who rely on free school meals are fed during the current lockdown - also said on Wednesday that he would reserve two tickets to a future match for a pair of NHS workers after labelling them the "real superstars."
