Manchester United pay tribute after former scout dies

Manchester United have paid tribute to former scout Geoff Watson who passed away last month.

Watson was a scout at Old Trafford during Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign at the club and spent a total of 25 years scouting players from around the world.

The scout, who hailed from the Warwickshire town of Nuneaton first joined United as a Midlands scout, after a chance meeting at a Nuneaton Borough game.

It was a position he held for around 10 years, before being personally promoted to chief recruitment scout by Ferguson.

The club have now paid tribute to the 74-year-old, who passed away on May 26.

“Geoff was a magnificent servant of Manchester United who loved working for the club,” a club spokesman said.“He was a selfless, meticulous and knowledgeable scout and was held in the highest esteem by colleagues, players and their families alike.

"His smile and warm sense of humour would light up the room. He will be missed by all. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.”

The funeral takes place next week, with lockdown restrictions reducing the number of people able to attend. If that hadn’t been the case it was thought that there would have been a number of representatives from Old Trafford at the service.
