Manchester United pair Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes miss out on Ballon d'Or

Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes were Manchester United's only representatives for the 2021 Ballon d'Or award.

Ronaldo ranked sixth and Fernandes ranked 21st in the award while Lionel Messi won the accolade for the seventh time.

Ronaldo has won five Ballon d'Ors across his career and only Paris Saint-Germain's Messi had won more with six before tonight, but the former Barcelona star has now extended his lead over Ronaldo for the prestigious personal honour.

With Ronaldo, 36, firmly in the autumn of his career, there were doubts over how effective he would remain in the Premier League, however, he's since emphatically silenced those critics this season by scoring 10 goals in 16 games across all competitions.

The forward has been the bright spark in an otherwise disappointing campaign for United and he's scored some decisive goals.

Although Fernandes has consistently been United's best player since his arrival from Sporting Libson in January last year, the midfielder has underperformed for his high standards this term, albeit he's not the only player at the club guilty of that.

His ranking of 21st in the Ballon d'Or standings is probably a fair reflection of his quality over the last calendar year.

Robert Lewandowski finished in the runners-up position for the award while Mohamed Salah finished third in the voting.
