Manchester United on 'red alert' as protest fears grow ahead of Liverpool

Manchester United are reportedly on 'red alert' ahead of Sunday's Premier League meeting with Liverpool amid the prospect of supporter protests making a return.

The last time the two teams met at the end of last season, United supporters broke into Old Trafford and stormed the pitch as they voiced their anger towards the European Super League proposals.

This resulted in the match being called off and replayed 11 days later on May 13, with Liverpool prevailing as 4-2 winners on the night.

There are now fears that similar scenes to those witnessed five months ago could be repeated this weekend as uncertainty grows surrounding Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's future.

Fans are once again growing frustrated at the lack of progress being made by the Red Devils, who have managed only two wins in their previous seven games.

A report by the Daily Star has claimed that United chiefs are 'consulting' with local authorities, including Greater Manchester Police, in a bid to make sure necessary security is in place to guarantee the games goes ahead without significant disruption.

The police managed to keep the situation under control on the night of the replayed fixture back in May, enabling the game to be played as planned and avoiding further disruption to the Premier League schedule.

A Liverpool team bus was blocked by by protestors' cars en route to Old Trafford, though it was not the coach carrying Jurgen Klopp and his players to the stadium.

The Reds later responded to the distraction of the events leading up to kick-off, with goals from Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino (2) and Mohamed Salah helping Klopp's side take an important step towards securing Champions League qualification.
