Manchester United on alert as Luis Campos eyes Lille exit following summer transfer fall out

Luis Campos has asked Lille owner Gerard Lopez to be released from his contract as head of recruitment for the French club.

Regarded as one of the most effective sports directors in European football after raising over €1.5billion in player sales across seven years in Ligue 1, Campos has decided to exit Lille following a series of disagreements over the club's summer transfer business.

Leading clubs in England, Italy and Spain have been made aware of Campos' availability at a time when the COVID pandemic has elevated the importance of efficient recruitment. AS Roma are understood to have offered the 56-year-old a position in Serie A.

During three seasons at Lille, Campos brought in over €350million in transfer fees while building a team that progressed from a relegation-threatened campaign under Marcelo Bielsa's management to finishing runners-up to Paris Saint-Germain with Christophe Galtier in charge.

In this summer's window alone, centre forward Victor Osimhen was sold to Lille in a deal worth €80m and centre back Gabriel to Arsenal for €30m.

In his previous position at AS Monaco, Campos constructed a squad that took 2016-17 French title from PSG and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League. Other signings from which Monaco and Lille have generated large profits include Fabinho, Thomas Lemar, Benjamin Mendy, Nicolas Pepe, Bernardo Silva and Kylian Mbappe, the most expensive teenager in the history of the game.

Campos worked for Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid and remains a trusted confidant, hosting his friend at Lille matches following dismissal as Manchester United manager in December 2018.

Mourinho had recommended Campos to United when Ed Woodward drew up plans to appoint the club's first director of football, but the executive vice-chairman refused to interview him for the role.

Now at Tottenham Hotspur, Mourinho has been keen to involve Campos in the Premier League club's recruitment. Upon his appointment in November, he hired assistant coach Joao Sacramento and goalkeeping coach Nuno Santos from Lille.

Lille have yet to release Campos from the final two years of his contract. The technical director has stayed away from the club's training ground since the European transfer market closed last week.
