Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is under consideration for an emotional return to Manchester United in a caretaker role.

Man United are on the market to appoint a new head coach after sacking Ruben Amorim on Monday following 14 months in charge.

According to the Athletic, United will take their time on a new permanent appointment and could even delay an announcement until the summer when the contracts of Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola and Marco Silva are set to expire.

For the time being, Darren Fletcher will be in the dugout for United’s Premier League clash against Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday night.

In the meantime, the aforementioned report states a longer-term caretaker has not been ruled out, with Solskjaer under consideration and Michael Carrick has also been mentioned for a possible return.

The Norwegian, himself, suffered the same fate as Amorim in November 2021.

Solskjaer was appointed as an interim replacement for Jose Mourinho in 2018 and went on to impress in the dugout, later earning a permanent three-year contract in the role.

A huge transfer outlay in the summer of 2021 increased pressure and he was ultimately sacked following a 4-1 defeat at Watford in November, with Ralf Rangnick coming into replace him before Erik ten Hag was appointed on a full-time basis.

Solskjaer has since had a spell at Besiktas which lasted seven months, though he did reveal back in September 2024 - when Ten Hag was Man Utd boss - that he would jump at the chance to return to Old Trafford.

"If the family [United] asks, I would say yes every day of the week," he said during a Q&A at the Oslo Business Forum.

"It feels wrong to talk about jobs that other people have now, but I would say yes, of course."
