Manchester United officially confirm signing of Liverpool midfielder

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of former Liverpool academy player Ethan Ennis.

Ennis, 16, was offered a scholarship deal from the Reds earlier this summer but the attacking midfielder turned down the proposal in favour of a move elsewhere.

The player confirmed his move to Manchester on social media last month and he has now been officially named in United's Professional Development Phase squad.

The Echo revealed earlier this summer that Ennis was in talks with Premier League rivals Chelsea, as well as United, before he opted to remain in the North West.

He posted a photo on Instagram at Old Trafford in July captioned: "I am delighted to announce that I have signed for Manchester United. Grateful for this opportunity, can't wait to get started."

Liverpool will be owed a development fee for the player which could be decided by a tribunal should the two clubs fail to reach an agreement.

Ennis broke into the under-18 set up last season featuring eight times for the club and he was part of the team that reached the FA Youth Cup Final against Aston Villa.

He featured in the third round tie against Sutton United and scored three goals in the Reds' 6-0 win back in March.

Liverpool were keen to keep a hold of the player and his departure will be seen as a blow, but the club are boosted by other talented youngsters penning fresh deals back in July, including Kaide Gordon.

Gordon made the switch from Derby to Anfield back in February and was among 11 scholars to agree fresh terms last month.

He went on to have an impressive pre-season that earned heaps of praise from Trent Alexander-Arnold, who described the 16-year-old as 'frightening' in a recent interview with The Athletic.

Gordon has scored six goals and registered three assists in eight appearances for the under-18s since February and he's already featured for the under-23s in Premier League 2, aged just 16.
