Manchester United offer Pep Guardiola their support following tragic death of his mother

Manchester United are among a number of clubs and sporting figures to offer their condolences after Pep Guardiola’s mother passed away on Monday after contracting coronavirus.

Manchester City confirmed via Twitter that Dolors Sala Carrio – who was 82-year-old - had passed away in Manresa, Barcelona.

Pep was the third of four children, with Dolors having two sons and two daughters after marrying her husband Valenti.

A club statement read: “Everyone associated with the club sends their most heartfelt sympathy at this most distressing time to Pep, his family and all their friends.”

Manchester United issued their own brief statement, which read: “Everyone at Manchester United is saddened to hear this terrible news. We send our heartfelt condolences to Pep and his family. #ACityUnited".

A number of City players also took to social media to show their support. Kevin de Bruyne wrote: “Thoughts are with Pep and his family at this time. One team”

Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling said: “All my thoughts and my deepest condolences to Pep and his family.

“Tragic news and a sad reminder for us all to stay home and protect our people.”

Benjamin Mendy added: "You always have treated me like a son and just like in a family we laugh together, we also cry together."

Goalkeeper Ederson also took to Instagram to write: “To Pep and his family that has a lot of strength at that moment. We are with you.”

Outside of Manchester, former Arsenal manager Unai Emery also paid his respects which read: “These are difficult and terribly sad times. I send all my love and support to those who are suffering at the moment.

“And I send my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Radomir Antic and also to Pep Guardiola for the passing of his mother. RIP.”

Tottenham, Brighton, Liverpool, Norwich and Arsenal also all expressed their support.
