Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was thrilled with the performance of his midfielders in Manchester United's 5-0 Champions League drubbing of RB Leipzig.
Solskjaer switched to a midfield diamond and recalled Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek to supplement Fred in a narrow system that countered Leipzig's intensity.
Matic and Van de Beek came off in the second-half with United 1-0 up but Fred completed 90 minutes for the fourth game running and Pogba was responsible for assisting Mason Greenwood's opener.
United have used four formations already this season - the back three, the diamond, 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 in the second-half of their goalless draw with Chelsea - and Solskjaer is pleased with their tactical flexibility.
"I think we have an abundance of good midfielders at the club," Solskjaer said. "I don't want to get too far ahead of myself. But today I think it worked, the work off the ball was incredible.
"Nemanja, Fred, Donny, Paul, all four of them worked their socks off. That's the basis of the team, if you can work and win the ball in good situations you create chances.
"I'm sure Fred covered every single little blade of grass on the pitch and it's unbelievable how that boy just recovers for the next one.
"The squad is good and, of course, it gives us options now. We have the possibility to play a 4-3-3, a diamond, 4-2-3-1, 3-4-1-2, but it's execution and it’s the principles and work-rate that’s key here.
"We've added some quality in the group, I’m very pleased with us at the moment."
