Manchester United not expected to follow Liverpool FC approach to furloughing staff

Manchester United are not expected to use a government scheme to furlough hundreds of non-playing staff, as some of their Premier League rivals have done.

On Saturday Liverpool became the latest club to announce they planned to take advantage of the government's Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, which sees the taxpayer fund 80% of the monthly wages of furloughed staff, up to £2,500 a month.

Newcastle, Bournemouth, Tottenham and Norwich have also furloughed staff under the scheme, which was designed to ease the financial pressure on small and medium-sized business during the economic crash that will be an inevitable side effect of the battle against COVID-19.

But Liverpool's decision to use the exchequer to fund wages of non-playing staff prompted a furious backlash over the weekend, with the club having posted a £42million profit less than six weeks ago.

While United have made no official comment on their plans, the MEN understands they are not expected to furlough staff.

Manchester City have also written to employees to say they won't be furloughing staff either.

United have already told matchday staff they will be paid for the remainder of the season, regardless of whether games go ahead as planned or are cancelled or played behind closed doors.

They also paid each supporter who had a ticket for the game against LASK Linz in Austria a one-off payment of £350, with that Europa League tie moved behind closed doors just two days before it was due to take place.
