Manchester United news including Edinson Cavani injury update and contract talks latest

Here are your Manchester United evening headlines for Friday, February 19.

Newcastle injury update

Donny van de Beek and Edinson Cavani could return for United against Newcastle United on Sunday, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explained in his pre-match press conference.

Solskjaer also confirmed that Paul Pogba and Phil Jones remain unavailable while Scott McTominay is dealing with an injury after he was substituted in the second half of Thursday's win over Real Sociedad.

"Paul is out, Phil [Jones] is out," Solskjaer said. "I don’t know how Scott is, don’t know how Edinson and Donny will be, either. They have a chance I think.

"We just have to give them until before training on Saturday, because Saturday we need to pick a team so we will see how they are, hopefully they can both be available."

Cavani contract talks begin

Solskjaer also confirmed that United will hold talks with Cavani to gauge his interest in returning to the club next season.

Cavani signed a one-year contract last summer, but United hold a club extension for a further 12 months.

The Uruguayan has impressed since making the free-agent switch from Paris Saint-Germain, scoring six league goals and making an impression on the young players in the dressing room.

Before exercising the clause, however, Solskjaer says that the club will hold discussions with Cavani.

"I can only say Edinson has done well," Solskjaer said. "I’ve been impressed by him, he’s really gelled in the group and we’ll sit down and speak with him in the near future to see his plans and our plans.

"It’s a good discussion to have, we always speak to the players and with his contract situation at the moment we’re very pleased with what he’s done."

Daniel James claims Fernandes assist

Daniel James says that he meant the touch to Bruno Fernandes for the Portuguese's second goal of United's 4-1 win over Real Sociedad on Thursday.

Fernandes produced a sumptuous dummy to release James, before then firing James' touch into the bottom corner with a brilliant finish.

And James says that he meant the touch, which looked like it was meant for him to strike, not Fernandes, when discussing the VAR review for the goal after it was initially ruled out for offside.

“I always knew I was onside," he told MUTV. "When I heard it was Bruno being checked I knew he was behind me so I knew it was going to be a goal. I was just thinking about the assist, I meant to touch it to him.
