Ed Woodward has offered an explanation after he was seemingly caught on camera rowing with Phil Jones during Manchester United‘s defeat to West Ham.
The executive vice-chairman appeared to tell Jones to “stop” as they sat in the stands at the London Stadium.
But Woodward has claimed he was not even talking to Jones at the time.
“Phil was talking about whether decisions were offside or not,” Woodward revealed to United We Stand.
“There was a foul and I turned around to Rebecca Britain, our club secretary [and said]: ‘Was that a yellow card on him? [Issa] Diop?’”
The exchange was caught on Sky television cameras, and social media speculation suggested that Jones may have joined him the home fans’ chants teasing under pressure manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Jones has been out since Manchester United’s Carabao Cup win over Rochdale with an apparent hamstring issue, but the club have not confirmed the extent or exact nature of the problem.
United have not won a game in 90 minutes since September 19, but secured a draw against league leaders Liverpool FC on Sunday afternoon to stay two points clear of the Premier League relegation zone.
