Manchester United need two more signings to compete with rivals City, says Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney believes Manchester United need to make two more signings before they can challenge rivals City for the Premier League title.

United finished second last season but ended up 19 points adrift of Manchester City, with Pep Guardiola’s men hitting the 100-point mark in a historic season for the club.

Despite being linked to numerous players this season, United have only brought in Diogo Dalot from Porto and Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Following the conclusion of the World Cup, United have yet to make a single signing with manager Jose Mourinho growing increasingly frustrated at his club’s lack of transfer activity.

And Rooney, who now plays for DC United, has said his former club must make an additional two signings if they’re to stand any chance of challenging for the title.

United’s record goalscorer said: “I think it will be difficult after the season they had last year. They [Manchester City] have been playing some great football.

“But I hope someone can catch them – it would be nice, so hopefully Manchester United can. I think maybe another signing or two.

“I am sure Jose (Mourinho) has been getting the team right. I know there has been a lot of talk about pre-season in the press but I am sure behind the scenes, Jose has been giving them the right amount of work.

“They have the game against Leicester on Friday so hopefully they can go one step further this year than second and try and get the title back.”
