Manchester United named best in Premier League at producing players for Europe's top leagues

Manchester United have been named the "most productive training club" in the Premier League when it comes to producing players for Europe's top leagues.

New figures published by the CIES Football Observatory give an indication of the work that has been done by United's youth Academy.

The report looks at which European clubs have brought through the most players currently active in the 31 top divisions of UEFA member associations.

Training clubs are defined as those where players have been for at least three seasons between 15 and 21 years of age.

Serbian side FK Partizan tops the table with 85 players trained, ahead of Dutch giants Ajax (77) and Dinamo Zagreb of Croatia (71).

A separate table has been produced for players who are currently playing in Europe's "big five" leagues - English Premier League, Spanish La Liga, Italian Serie A, German Bundesliga and French Ligue 1.

That list is topped by Real Madrid (43), Barcelona (32) and Lyon (31) - but United are the top ranked English club, with 24.

United are just ahead of Premier League rivals Arsenal (23) in the table, with Chelsea next in line (20).

"For the first time, for each footballer, we also considered the number of domestic league matches played over the last year, the sporting level of clubs where they played them, as well as their age," said the CIES Football Observatory.

"This allowed us to calculate a weighted score reflecting the training work carried out by clubs also from a qualitative and temporal perspective."

United's "trained" players have an average age of 27.6 and played an average of 16 matches in the past 12 months.

The overall table showed that United had trained 35 players in Europe's top 31 leagues.

That put them just behind Arsenal, who had produced 39.
