Manchester United morning headlines as Upamecano battle and youngster handed transfer advice

Here are the Manchester United morning headlines for Tuesday, April 14.

Transfer race

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has joined the race to sign RB Leipzig’s highly-rated centre-half Dayot Upamecano, according to reports.

The 21-year-old France international is about to go into the final year of his contract in Germany – and has a release clause of £52.5 million should any club wish to lure him away.

United are reportedly in the running – alongside Manchester City, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona.

Despite his apparent interest in Upamecano, though, Solskjaer won’t be distracted from his pursuit of Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho, who remains a top target – although Real Madrid are also interested in the England international.

Gomes handed transfer advice

A former United star has suggested that Angel Gomes may have to leave Old Trafford if he wants to play regular first-team football.

Ben Thornley says the teenage midfielder may make the tough decision to move on a free transfer in order to progress his career – even though Solskjaer rates him and would like him to sign a contract extension to stay on.

"I can understand what a predicament Angel Gomes is in. It was exactly the same sort of thing that I found myself in at Manchester United,” he said.

"Angel's probably thinking to himself, I'm in my early 20s now, I need to think about which path my career wants to go down, as difficult and as much of a wrench it ever would be to leave Manchester United.”

From one Paul to another

Paul Pogba has revealed how much he learnt from playing alongside Paul Scholes as a youngster.

The French star progressed through the ranks at United as a teenager but left for Juventus in 2012 due to a lack of first-team opportunities.

Now, however, he says that watching players like Scholes helped him to improve his own game.

“You learn a lot and you look at them,” said Pogba.  “I really learned and have been learning. It was unbelievable for me, seeing them training like that, and it pushed me.

“Okay, I have to work hard and have a lot more to do. [Andrea] Pirlo [at Juventus] and Scholes, those are midfielders who control the game, the players to look at, and I learned from them, a lot.”
