Pochettino speaks about managerial return
Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has outlined the criteria for his next job.
Defeat at home by Arsenal on Sunday heightened speculation over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's future at the club. Pochettino was United's initial choice to take over at Old Trafford after Mourinho's dismissal in 2018 but interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer secured the job on a permanent basis courtesy of an incredible run of form after first coming in.
For as long as Pochettino is out of a job, his name will never be too far away from the spotlight when United go through a sticky patch.
“I don’t know,” Pochettino said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football when asked if his next job will be in the Premier League. “I’m not going to close any doors. I got told when I was very, very young that football was going to dictate my way. Football is going to make the decision.
“I’m waiting to feel what is the right project for us. We are living in a crisis. Football is part of my life, but my energy is full and I love to be involved in the game, but at the same time I need to understand that I need to wait for the right project.”
Neville: fans don't expect too much of Pogba
Former United defender Gary Neville doesn’t believe too much is expected of Paul Pogba, with the French midfielder’s role at the club currently under scrutiny.
Pogba gave away the penalty kick from which Arsenal scored their winner against United on Sunday, putting the 27-year-old in the firing line for more criticism after years of being under the microscope.
“I don’t think we expect too much from him, when you’ve won the trophies he’s won and played in the games he’s played in, and the price that the club paid for him, then you’d expect best-in-class performances,” Neville said.
“The fact that we’re always talking about him is a compliment, the expectation levels he’s set and the standards he’s set at the previous club and with France.”
Solskjaer urged to follow Arteta's example
Martin Keown has urged Solskjaer to follow the lead of Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta in tailoring his formation to the players he has.
“There are some tough decisions for Solskjaer going forward,” Keown said on Match of the Day 2 . “It looks like he’s trying to get players like Pogba in the team. Fernandes was awful as well, they’re just not clicking. They’re not playing and he’s got to find a system he wants to work with and stick with it.
“That’s what Arteta has now done. Arsenal, primarily, have played with a back five, which is the blueprint for how they want to play. Manchester United, with this diamond, I’m not sure where the whip is coming from.
“I don’t see the full-backs, I don’t see Wan-Bissaka wanting to get forward, as good a defender as he is. I don’t think the way they play really suits the players they have.”
