Manchester United morning headlines as Matic sends challenge and Solskjaer makes Pereira admission

Here are your Manchester United morning headlines for Saturday, October 3.

Matic: “We need to keep winning”

Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic believes the team must embark on a winning run of at least five matches if they are to be considered Premier League title contenders.

Tottenham Hotspur visit United on Sunday in the first of three successive home games against 'big six' clubs, with Chelsea and Arsenal due at Old Trafford in October and November.

“I always like to say the team who is fighting for the title needs to have that run always of five/six games before you drop some points,” Matic told the United programme .

“That’s normal, no team can win every game.

“We've already dropped some points at home in the first game so now we need to make a run of five/six games winning, winning, winning because then we will have a chance to win some trophies. That’s exactly how we finished last season.”

United fans in favour of Maguire and Bailly partnership

Manchester United supporters want to see a partnership of Harry Maguire and Eric Bailly against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

United started their Premier League season with a 3-1 defeat at home to Crystal Palace, followed by a dramatic 3-2 win against Brighton and Hove Albion.

But the defending in both games was far from ideal, with Victor Lindelof involved in each of the three goals conceded against Palace.

And, as a result of their poor performances, fans would like to see some changes be made at the heart of defence, with 87.6 per cent of the 7,710 votes in favour of a Maguire/Bailly pairing.

Fernandes signing prompted Pereira departure

Bruno Fernandes’ January arrival at Manchester United paved the way for Andreas Pereira’s departure to Lazio, according to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Brazilian has joined the Serie A side on an initial season-long loan, with an option to make the move a permanent one next summer.

Pereira signed a new four-year contract with United just last year, which has proven to be prohibitive to a permanent transfer, but has found himself pushed further down the midfield pecking order at the club.

“They’re a big club, Lazio. Andreas needs to play regularly,” the Norwegian told United’s official website when asked if it was a good move for Pereira.

“He started last season really well and played loads of games.

“You could see the confidence growing and see him developing but, after we signed Bruno, that position that Andy played in was taken because Bruno came in and had such an impact.

“We decided this is what was best for Andreas.”
