Manchester United morning headlines as Maguire backed by England manager

Here are your Manchester United morning headlines for Thursday, 15 October.

United captain receives backing from England boss

Manchester United’s Harry Maguire has endured a torrid time lately, with a high-profile off-field incident over the summer break, and a slow start to the campaign which has seen him turn in some questionable performances.

Things got worse for him last night after he was sent off for two bookable offences against Denmark in England’s 1-0 Nations League defeat.

England manager Gareth Southgate was swift to lend his support to his first-choice central defender, however.

"For me, he’s a top player, he’s a massive part of what we do, he’s having a period where he’s getting a lot of sticks thrown his way but he’s big enough to deal with that,” he said in an interview with Sky Sports after the loss.

Southgate backed Maguire to return to the form which saw him become the most expensive defender of all time when United paid £80million to sign him in 2019.

Deadline Day signing speaks

New signing Facundo Pellistri has described himself as a creative player who aims to provide his team-mates with plenty of assists.

The 18-year-old was a deadline-day acquisition from Penarol and has told United’s official site about his background, style of play and what he hopes to bring to the team.

“I would describe myself as a fast player who likes to be in touch with the ball and provide assists,” the Uruguayan said .

He added that he was looking forward to learning from the attacking players already at the club.

'Everyone needs to give more', says Shaw

United’s Luke Shaw has stated in an interview with the club’s official website that the squad know they need to “work harder than ever” in order to turn their poor form around.

This season has already seen United lose 3-1 to Crystal Palace and 6-1 to Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.

Shaw outlined what the side must do this weekend at St James’ Park, as they face Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United.

“We need to control the game. We need to create chances. We need to be clinical and, especially at the back, we need to be more solid,” Shaw said.

“Everyone needs to give a little bit extra, including myself. We want to and need to. This club deserves that.”
