Manchester United morning headlines as former teammate backs Grealish price tag

Here are your Manchester United morning headlines for Sunday, May 24.

Ex-Villa man backs Grealish fee

Former Aston Villa right-back Alan Hutton believes Jack Grealish would be worth every penny of his proposed £80m transfer fee.

MEN Sport understands that United would rather sign Grealish than Leicester attacking midfielder James Maddison  this summer.

And Hutton, who played alongside the 24-year-old for seven years at Villa Park before retiring last summer, believes the valuation of his former team-mate is accurate.

Obviously it's a massive price tag, but in my opinion, he's worth every penny, he's that good," Hutton told Football Insider.

"He could be a team's game-changer, and that's no disrespect to anyone at Aston Villa, you know I love them to bits, but for him to be playing with a top-four team, I think he'd be outstanding.

"Everybody would be buzzing off him, they would see his quality, and I think he would only grow in stature, so I totally understand the price tag.”

Smalling explains Roma decision

Chris Smalling says he chose to join Roma last summer because he’s always wanted to play abroad.

The centre-back has spent the 2019/20 season on loan with the Serie A club, where he’s impressed with his consistent performances.

Roma are reportedly keen to make the move permanent this summer, although Smalling’s future remains unresolved for now.

“Some English players have gone abroad but not many," he told The Times. "It was a challenge that I wanted to take.

“I’m someone who definitely lives by not having any regrets. I like new things maybe out of my comfort zone and show people that anything is possible.

"I obviously enjoy my football, I enjoy my life and I try to maximise all of that but seeing kids flourish and invest in people who have good ideas is where I get my main fulfilment.”

Fans back Matic to flourish

United fans believe Nemanja Matic will be the perfect midfield foil for Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes when the season resumes.

With the Premier League season set to get back underway next month, United players returned to training this week.

Pogba has missed most of the campaign to date with injury, but the three-month pause in proceedings means he could still play in 2019/20.

And several supporters on Twitter believe Matic would be the best player to complete the midfield trio alongside Pogba and Fernandes.

Fred has been one of United’s standout performers this term, but fans believe Matic would provide better balance in the holding role.
