Manchester United morning headlines as Fernandes defends Lingard

Klopp's phone call to Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson presented the LMA Manager of the Year trophy to Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, after the German guided his team to the Premier League title after a 30-year wait.

In his video speech, Ferguson revealed that Klopp had phoned him after the title was confirmed as Liverpool’s - at half-past three in the morning.

“The winner, Jurgen Klopp. Jurgen, fantastic. I speak about Leeds United and 16 years in the Championship, Liverpool 30 years since winning that league is incredible,” Ferguson said.

"You thoroughly deserved it. The performance level of your team was fantastic. Your personality runs right through the whole club. I think it was a marvellous performance.

"I will forgive you for waking me up in the morning at half-past three to tell me you'd won the league. Thank you."

Scholes sums up United's league campaign

United legend Paul Scholes took to Instagram to laud a campaign of forward steps under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

But he stopped short of saying it was a success for United, whose last hope of clinching some silverware this season is in the Europa League.

A final-day win over Leicester City ensured a top-four finish for United, and Scholes uploaded a picture to Instagram of the manager celebrating.

But his message in the post was cautionary as much as celebratory. “Big achievement? No! Progress? Yes!” he wrote.

Fernandes defends Lingard

Jesse Lingard waited until the final seconds of the season before scoring his first goal of the campaign, but Bruno Fernandes says it was a reward he “deserves” for his hard work.

The duo both scored in the 2-0 win over the Foxes at the King Power Stadium.

The Portuguese midfielder says his team-mate did an “amazing job” in pressing Kasper Schmeichel in the closing stages, stopping Leicester coming forward and ultimately scoring himself.

"Of course it's a mistake from the keeper, but if Jesse doesn't go there the goal doesn't come, so it's for this we work,” Fernandes said.

"For me Jesse deserved this goal because for what he works on all week. I think this is the reason Jesse scored because we're training hard, training hard to help all the team.”
