Manchester United morning headlines as Dean Henderson sent warning and furlough latest

Here are the Manchester United morning headlines for Tuesday, April 7.

De Gea backed by United legend

Legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has warned Manchester United that Dean Henderson is not yet ready to challenge David de Gea as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Despite the 23-year-old’s success on loan at Sheffield United over the past two years, helping them to promotion and towards the top of the Premier League table, the Dane says De Gea must still be the first name on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team sheet next season.

“There's no doubt about Henderson's potential, but he's played one season at a club who has had an unbelievable run in the Premier League,” Schmeichel said in an Instagram Live.

“But Henderson will need to show another season, like he's just come through, and then another one, and another one, in order to convince everyone that he is the right guy.

“There's a really big difference between being the No.1 at Bramall Lane and being the No.1 at Old Trafford, a really big difference - even just being a player at those two clubs.”

Tuanzebe's routine

Defender Axel Tuanzebe is currently training six days a week, working with his brother Dimitri to keep up his fitness – and keeping in touch with his United team-mates via social media and FaceTime.

"I try to make my routine as close to normality as possible,” he told the MEN.

"I'm still trying to get my training in with very good hygiene, eating correctly, all these factors. All the exercise, the right nutrition. I just try and stick to that routine. Obviously, we have no idea when this season will resume or if it will resume any time soon, so I'm just trying to get ready for that, really."

United won't use furlough scheme

Despite the football season’s suspension, United will not be making use of the government’s furlough scheme – and will continue to pay all staff in full.

In an email circulated to employees, Ed Woodward wrote that the club were committed to paying them as normal.

Staff have been told to work from home where possible, and have been assured they have the flexibility to keep up with any care responsibilities they might have in the current circumstances.

The club’s 950 casual matchday staff will also receive goodwill payments – covering the wages they would have received had the season continued as scheduled.
