Manchester United morning headlines as Borussia Dortmund issue Jadon Sancho statement

Here are the Manchester United morning headlines for Monday, August 10.

Dortmund issue statement after Sancho trip to England

Borussia Dortmund insist they have no issue with Manchester United target Jadon Sancho travelling to England over the weekend and have named him in their pre-season training squad.

United have made the signing of Sancho their number one priority for the summer transfer window, with speculation sent in overdrive after the England international was pictured in the UK on Saturday.

However, Dortmund director of media and communication Sascha Fligge said the Bundesliga club is not concerned by Sancho’s trip back to England, amid such intense speculation about his future.

“It's common and fine for players to go home before a training camp if they're not risky,” he said. “The same goes for Jadon [Sancho].

“From our point of view, the pictures that have been shown to us so far do not violate.”

Williams opens on up on what drives him to keep improving

Young left-back Brandon Williams has opened up on how the threat of being demoted back to the club’s under-23s pushes him to continue to improve.

The 19-year-old has made 34 appearances in all competitions for United this season, putting pen to paper on a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2024. But Williams isn’t taking anything for granted.

“It's not a case of that,” the teenager said when asked whether his new contract made sure of his place in the United senior squad for next season.

“At any time, I can drop down into the under-23s. I could pick up an injury or anything. I'm focused on what I'm doing and I'm going to keep on working hard. Keep on improving on what I need to improve on and play as many games as I can.”

Solskjaer hints at goalkeeper plans for next season

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has suggested he is unlikely to go into the 2020/21 season with David de Gea, Dean Henderson and Sergio Romero in his squad.

De Gea’s first team place has come under scrutiny of late after a series of mistakes, with Sergio Romero playing in the Europa League and Henderson impressing on loan at Sheffield United. Solskjaer’s latest comments suggest something will have to give.

“That’s an obvious question. I think I must be the most privileged manager in the world with the goalkeeping department, with Sergio, David and we've got Dean Henderson coming back; three top, top keepers,” the Norwegian said.

“As you say, competition for places is important. We are looking to have competition for places. We have Dean, Sergio, David in the ranks. Lee [Grant], the fantastic professional that he is, backing them up. It will be difficult to keep three of them at the club, so we will see what the decision will be there.”
