Manchester United morning headlines as Alphonso Davies transfer talks discussed

Here are your Manchester United morning headlines for Wednesday, April 6.

Berbatov never wanted City

Dimitar Berbatov has opened up on how close he came to joining Manchester City in 2008.

The striker sealed a £30m move to United from Tottenham Hotspur on transfer deadline day at the start of the 2008/09 season.

City agreed a deal with Spurs before United, but Berbatov remained patient as he sought to complete his dream transfer to Old Trafford.

"In my mind, it was never [close to a City move]," Berbatov told MUTV

"Because in that time, for me, it was about reaching my personal top, and that was Man United at that time.

"When you see the shirt, the red shirt, the badge, the history, the players, the managers... I mean, you fell in love immediately.”

Mourinho ‘really wanted’ Davies

Manchester United missed out on a deal for Alphonso Davies because they 'didn't have the same vision and belief' as Bayern Munich, a former coach has said.

Jose Mourinho is said to have been keen on getting a deal done for the left-back, now at the German giants, for some time, but according to one of the defender's former coaches,  United  missed the boat.

Nick Huoseh, former coach at Davies' old team the Edmonton Strikers, said that Mourinho wanted the club to make a move for the Canadian international - who can also play as a winger.

"When Jose Mourinho was there, he really wanted him but it never happened," Huoseh told  Sky Sports. "They waited and waited, and at the end I don't think they had the same vision and belief as Munich.

"I met with one or two other clubs, but speaking with the Bayern guys and seeing their plan I thought it was the best place for Alphonso." The MEN has previously revealed how United scouted him extensively but didn't get a deal done.

How training change made Ronaldo great

A change in Cristiano Ronaldo’s training regime helped him become the world’s best player, according to Darren Fletcher.

Ronaldo went from highly-rated teenager to world-class superstar during his time at Old Trafford, where he played alongside Fletcher.

And the former Scotland international believes the competitiveness of training at United was key to Ronaldo’s development.

"He was probably thankful for coming into that environment because it made him a winner," Fletcher told the Lockdown Tactics podcast.

"He learned English so quick, he was 18, he took extra training every day, he was the first player to go and get a personal chef, he brought in ankle weights to train with so in a game he felt sharper when he took them off, he was manipulating his body.

"What a guy, he was determined to be the best player in the world and when you see his ability, and yeah he was frustrating in the beginning, he was a young skinny lad, the dedication and the effort he put in and the single-mindedness to go and become the best in the world.”
