Manchester United monitoring coronavirus outbreak on a 'day-by-day' basis

Manchester United are monitoring the evolving situation around the coronavirus outbreak on a 'day-by-day' basis after the number of confirmed cases in Greater Manchester jumped to nine.

United chiefs have yet to announce plans for a summer tour either, and it is understood club officials will take the global situation into account before firming up a pre-season schedule.

The coronavirus outbreak has already had an impact on the global football calendar and on other club's plans for the summer, with Borussia Dortmund this week pulling out of a summer tour in Asia.

Organisers of the International Champions Cup pre-season tournament have also shelved plans to hold any fixtures in Asia this summer, with the outbreak of the virus occurring in China.

There have been reports that United were due to play a friendly game in India in July.

In Europe the Serie A calendar has been hit, with Italy currently the centre of the coronavirus outbreak on the continent, while the Swiss football league has been placed on hold until March 23.

The Premier League have been liaising with the government's public health experts over the situation in England and have written to all 20 clubs advising on contingency plans to deal with the spread of the virus in this country.

Some clubs have already banned handshakes between players and staff and told players not to sign autographs or pose for pictures.

Officials at Old Trafford are keeping abreast of the latest developments around the outbreak on a daily basis and will take 'external factors' into account when they finalise plans for pre-season.

While matches and tours have been postponed in Asia, games in America are continuing to be scheduled, with the country yet to be hit by a major outbreak of the virus, which has now killed more than 3,200 people, with more than 94,000 confirmed cases worldwide.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was asked about the threat of coronavirus last week, ahead of the Europa League last-16 draw which paired United with LASK Linz.

“I think the whole world has to think differently and be aware of the virus,” Solskjaer said.

“I think we’ll definitely look at things when we do. You can see what happens in Italy with the games and I think it’s a worry for everyone."

While the domestic calendar in Italy and Switzerland has been affected, with Serie A matches played behind closed doors, there is no suggestion yet that will happen in England, although while the number of confirmed cases continue to rise it will remain a possibility.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said on Tuesday that the government was not currently recommending the cancellation of large events.

There are now 87 confirmed coronavirus cases in the UK.
