Manchester United ‘missed a trick’ not selling Paul Pogba in the summer

There's no denying that Paul Pogba is a fantastic midfielder, but his second spell at Manchester United has been somewhat underwhelming.

Considering the fact he cost the club a whopping £89 million, the Frenchman has failed to really produce the goods on a consistent basis since his move back from Juventus.

He has, however, started this season in spectacular fashion, becoming the first player in Premier League history to register five assists in the opening two games of a campaign.

If anything, his quality start to the season has only made the debate around his future even more complicated. In the latest United On My Mind Facebook Live, writer Omar Garrick and trends writer Anil Kandola gave their thoughts on Pogba's current situation and predicted what the future may hold for the World Cup winner.

OG : “Pogba’s always a talking point in an international break. He hasn’t come out and said anything at all recently, but he was benched against Everton and there might be something that comes out soon - there’s always something that happens with him during an international break.

United have said they aren’t feeling pressured to get Pogba to sign a new deal, but time is ticking. I don’t think there’s any indication that he will be signing one any time soon."

AK : “The only factor, and it’s a massive factor, is that he’s just such an incredible player and that’s the only spanner in the works. The situation speaks for itself, he seems reluctant to sign a new contract. There’s a lot of reports that United offered him a new contract quite some time ago.

“United's signings this summer show their aspirations and I know that's previously been a problem for Pogba. Understandably so, as he goes away with his international teammates and experiences World Cup glory, so you can understand what he’s chasing.

“The Everton game was interesting because Pogba was named on the bench but it suited Manchester United. It’s so difficult to leave Pogba on the bench because of how talented he is, but if I’m being brutally honest United missed a trick in the summer just gone.

“If United sold him in the summer they could’ve got a substantial amount of money for him. Next summer, Pogba could leave for free yet again and it’ll be massively disappointing to let him go.

“In terms of his future at Manchester United and moving forward, it may be time to call it a day.”

OG : “There are pros and cons in terms of getting rid of him. There are players like Donny van de Beek waiting in the wings and he’d be given more opportunities should Pogba leave.

“In terms of his best position, he hasn’t really played in the number eight role this season. He’s been playing on the left and whilst he has seven assists to his name which is ridiculous at this moment in time, it feels like United are slowly moving in the direction of preparing for life without Paul Pogba.”
