Manchester United midfielder tells team-mates what they 'cannot allow' Liverpool to do

Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has sent a Premier League title warning to Liverpool.

The Reds ended their long wait to be crowned Premier League champions after Manchester City's 2-1 loss at Chelsea in June.

Liverpool then beat Chelsea 5-3 in their final home to sign off from their season at Anfield in style before lifting their first league crown since 1990 in a special ceremony.

The special ceremony featured Sir Kenny Dalglish giving the Reds’ stars their medals on the Kop before for the fourth time in fewer than 14 months, Jordan Henderson assumed trophy-lifting duties, surrounded by his teammates and fan banners on the famous stand.

While United have been unable to mount a proper challenge for the title since Sir Alex Ferguson's final season in charge in 2013 and finished 33 points behind Jurgen Klopp’s side last season.

But Matic believes his side should be aiming to put pressure on the Reds next season and can’t let their rivals be crowned champions with a number of games to spare.

"Me, personally, I would like to win the Premier League with Manchester United. I think that our club always needs to fight for the title," the 32-year-old told Inside United.

"We always need to try to do the best for this club, which we are doing at the moment, and I think we cannot allow any club to win the league seven or 10 games before the season finishes. So we have to fight until the end.

"Of course, we have a young team, but this cannot be an excuse. I think these young players already have a few seasons behind them playing.

“So, from the next season, we have to fight for the title. I don’t know if we’re going to win [it] but I’m sure that we can fight until the end. That’s my personal target and I think the rest of my team-mates think the same."
