Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay withdraws from Scotland squad through injury

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has withdrawn from the Scotland squad through injury.

The 22-year-old will miss Scotland's upcoming international fixtures against Cyprus and Kazakhstan after suffering an injury in United's weekend win against Brighton.

McTominay suffered his setback in the closing stages of the 3-1 win on Sunday, and had to be taken down the tunnel at Old Trafford on a stretcher.

The midfielder had a scan on Monday to reveal the extent of his injury, and although no timescale has been given for his lay-off he will miss the two international matches.

It is not known if McTominay will be back in contention for United's next match when they travel to  face Sheffield United on November 24.

McTominay's injury means United now only have David de Gea, Harry Maguire, Marcus Rashford, Victor Lindelof and Daniel James on international duty this week.

Speaking after the weekend win Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted he was unsure of the severity of the suspected ankle injury.

"He went over on his ankle, it's a painful one sometimes that's... I've had one, I was out for eight weeks but then again sometimes you have one and you're back in two weeks," Solskjaer said.

"I don't know, he's in for a scan tomorrow and then we'll have to see, with the ice there. But it looked painful, Scotty's not one for rolling around.

"Or he didn't really roll around, because that's probably the sign he's injured, all the players that keep rolling aren't injured."
