Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay names favourite player between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has given his verdict on the never-ending debate over whether Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi is the better player.

Former United winger Ronaldo is still well thought of at Old Trafford, receiving a hero's welcome when he returned for the Champions League fixture with Juventus last season.

But United also faced Barcelona in the quarter finals, with Messi scoring twice at the Nou Camp in the second leg to dump McTominay and his teammates out of the competition.

Debate will always surround Messi and Ronaldo long after they have retired, with their European records compared along with personal and international accolades.

Now McTominay has given his verdict, potentially at the risk of annoying United fans.

Speaking in an MUTV feature with teammate Axel Tuanzebe, McTominay asked Tuanzebe to guess his sporting hero. McTominay then revealed his answer was Messi, saying: "100%. The greatest of all time."

Other answers in the feature revealed that Tuanzebe's all time favourite player was "all time magician" Ronaldinho, while McTominay's nickname in the United academy was 'Tinman'.

McTominay revealed his love for golf when he isn't following football, and Tuanzebe admitted he would love to have the super power of super speed.

The duo were both named in the matchday squad as United beat Chelsea at the weekend, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to inject youth into his squad. Tuanzebe will be looking to establish himself as the third choice centre-back to Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof, while McTominay will be hoping to hold off the challenge from Nemanja Matic and Fred to continue starting in midfield.
