Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic sends title warning to youngsters

Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic believes the club's young players must step up if they want to challenge for the Premier League title again.

United are battling for a place in the top four this season, with the title almost certainly heading to rivals Liverpool in the coming weeks.

The club remain committed to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his rebuild at Old Trafford.

Matic admitted the squad aren't pleased with their position in the standings this season.

He believes United's young players hold the key to the club competing at the top of the table again and challenged them to show their quality next season.

The Reds remain in the race for two trophies - the FA Cup and Europa League - and Matic believes winning at least one and finishing in the top four would class this season as a success.

"If you are fifth in the table, the balance is not right especially for a club like Manchester United. We have to fight for the title," he told BBC Radio 5 live.

"I think we have a lot of young players who need to show they have to show quality if they want to win the title.

"In the future, we will see if we are in a good way. I am not happy when we are in fifth position and I am always trying to win something.

"I think at the moment I cannot say we are in a great position but by the end of the season it will be good to see if we have managed to win something and finish in fourth."
