Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek ruled out of European Championship

Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek has been ruled out of the European Championship through injury.

Van de Beek, 24, endured a difficult debut season in English football following his move from Ajax last summer, with the midfielder struggling to hold down a regular place in the starting line-up.

The Dutch international scored on his debut in defeat to Crystal Palace last September, but only made 36 appearances in total across all competitions for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side.

His bad luck has continued into the summer after he withdrew from the Netherlands squad for Euro 2020, which is due to start on Friday.

Van de Beek trained alone from the rest of his international teammates in a session on Monday afternoon, but has not been able to recover in time for selection for the tournament.

A statement from KNVB on Tuesday read: "Donny van de Beek has to let the European championship pass by. The Manchester United midfielder is struggling with an injury.

"As a result, the 19-time international, who last played minutes in Orange in March during Gibraltar – Netherlands (0-7), is not available in time for the European Championship. National coach Frank de Boer does not call for a replacement for Van de Beek."

The Netherlands begin their European Championship campaign on Sunday when they face Ukraine at the Amsterdam ArenA. They also face Austria and North Macedonia in Group C.
