Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen responds to Paul Scholes comparison

Christian Eriksen has insisted it is an 'honour' to be compared to Manchester United legend Paul Scholes after a strong start to his time with the club.

The Dane arrived at Old Trafford on a free transfer from Brentford in the summer, signing a contract until June 2025. The move saw Eriksen reunite with United boss Erik ten Hag, who helped facilitate his return from the cardiac arrest he suffered at Euro 2020 by inviting him to train with Ajax during his rehabilitation.

During his time with the Bees, the 30-year-old grabbed a goal and four assists in the Premier League, with his impressive showings leading the Reds to make a move for his services.

Eriksen has started in every single game under Ten Hag so far this season, recording two assists. Prior to his arrival at the club, many people compared his playing style (and also bit-part playing time) to Juan Mata, But after watching him dictate play from the centre of midfield, many others have suggested he operates like Paul Scholes.

The former Tottenham man admitted that it was 'great' to be compared to the two former United stars, but added that he was keen to 'create his own way'. “It’s football in a nutshell and shows how fast it is,” Eriksen told Politiken.

“Of course, it is great to be compared to them, but you create your own ways and your own name. I was lucky that I managed to play against Paul Scholes. He was a good player, so I’m happy to be compared to him.”

Eriksen also suggested that he was aware of just how big United's brand is worldwide, and that he has since found out 'what is true'.

He added: “Like everyone else, I’ve previously been one of those sitting and reading about what happened in United. It is a huge club, and no one in the world does not know about the brand United.

“You can see how much is being written. Stories about one and the other, both for good and evil. When you are part of it, you find out what is true and what is not true. What to trust and what not to trust.”
