Manchester United manager Solskjaer makes Mason Greenwood and Ryan Giggs comparison

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has compared Mason Greenwood's development at Manchester United to when club legend Ryan Giggs broke into the first-team.

Giggs made his United debut in March 1991 aged 17 and the United manager Sir Alex Ferguson described seeing the Welshman play for the first-team as 'like a cocker spaniel chasing a piece of silver paper in the wind'.

Greenwood also debuted for United aged 17 in March of this year and his excellent pre-season tour form continued with a ruthless winning goal against Inter Milan in Singapore on Saturday night.

The Bradford-born striker also hit the post moments after his second-half strike in the 1-0 victory and Solskjaer again suggested the right wing role is becoming Greenwood's to lose.

"The kid's only 17 and he's learning every day training with these boys," Solskjaer said. "He's been with us the last few months, he's grown in confidence, he's grown in stature and, as I said before, when you've got players who perform it's difficult to keep them out.

"But we've got to keep our feet on the ground with him, he's only 17, there'll be ups and downs but he's enjoying his football.

"Mason's never been on my mind to send out on loan, he's one we have to keep at our place, keep him and play him when we feel it's good for him and at the moment he's fine.

"He reminds me a little bit about the Giggsy story, you can't really send him on loan and for me he's ready to be in this squad."

Greenwood's fellow substitute Tahith Chong suffered a number of robust challenges from Inter players in the second-half but Solskjaer was content with the flow of the match

"You want competitive games and of course don't expect anything different," Solskjaer added. "In pre-season games, when it's 0-0 it might be okay but when one team is leading the other team...

"Juan [Mata] got a few tackles, Tahith got a few tackles and Dan James. But we are here to prepare for the season and the game was really competitive."
