Manchester United manager Solskjaer cannot understand Cristiano Ronaldo critics

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer cannot understand those who see a downside to Cristiano Ronaldo's return to Manchester United.

Ronaldo has scored nine goals in ten starts since he rejoined the club from Juventus on transfer deadline day, with his five Champions League goals responsible for United's seven points in Group F.

The 36-year-old is set to start in his first Manchester derby since May 2009 against City, who expected to sign Ronaldo until Sir Alex Ferguson intervened and United made an 11th hour offer to re-sign him.

Certain analysts have criticised Ronaldo's pressing stats and suggested he is holding United back, but Solskjaer ridiculed the alternative criticism from football's pseuds.

"He's one of the best players that's ever walked on this planet," Solskjaer said. "And his impact so far on and off the pitch has been absolutely immense.

"The goals he scores, the way he conducts himself in and around the place. How people can see that as a negative... I can't see that one.

"We're really, really pleased he's started off as he has. He scores goals, works for his team, and is a top, top professional."

The United squad enjoyed another team bonding lunch in Hale on Thursday, having arranged for one just before the start of the season in Spinningfields.

"The team is very close together and they know they need each other, it's team bonding and the team spirit is important," Solskjaer added. "We've got a great canteen up here but they are probably fed up with Mike [Donnelly]'s food!"
