Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick confirms Victor Lindelof has Covid-19 and explains Mason Greenwood recall

Victor Lindelof is the latest Manchester United player to contract Covid-19.

Lindelof suffered an episode in United's last match at Norwich 16 days ago and had to wear a heart monitor but the club confirmed it was unrelated to the Covid outbreak in the first-team squad.

The 27-year-old was conspicuous by his absence for the Premier League fixture at Newcastle, where Raphael Varane has returned to the starting line-up for the first time since sustaining a hamstring injury at Atalanta on November 2.

Mason Greenwood is the only other change to the United side at the expense of Jadon Sancho and Rangnick emphasised his unhappiness with the body language of some of the forwards at Carrow Road.

"Unfortunately Victor Lindelof tested positive yesterday, so he cannot play. But the good thing is we have Raphael Varane available again and he is back in the starting line-up," Rangnick told Sky Sports.

"Since last Tuesday and even more so since last Thursday, we had three or four training sessions of a high level.

"He (Greenwood) is definitely playing up front, but in which position, you will see. But he deserves to play. He did extremely well in the last two or three weeks in training, also when he came on and played against Young Boys, so he just deserves to be in the starting line-up today.

"It was about decision-making against Norwich, in certain parts of the game we didn't take the right decisions. I didn't like the body language in some parts of the game.

"And this was also a topic when we prepared for today's game, it's an away game in front of 55,000 and we need to take the next step, we need to be aggressive and prepare for a difficult, intense game."
