Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists he meant no disrespect to Roma when he said he had not watched them play.
After United's Europa League quarter-final win over Granada this month, Solskjaer was asked about Roma and said: "I don’t know them and I haven’t seen them play."
Roma supporters pinned up a banner of Solskjaer, accompanied by the aforementioned quote, with the sign-off, 'Fate in modo che si ricordi di noi' - make sure he remembers us.
When United drew Roma in the 2007 Champions League quarter-finals, Sir Alex Ferguson unwittingly caused offence by omitting captain Francesco Totti from Roma's list of star players. Totti vowed he would make Ferguson 'remember me' before Roma were annihilated 7-1 at Old Trafford.
Solskjaer, a starter in the first leg in Rome 14 years ago and substitute in the home thrashing, clarified his comments.
"That was straight after the game, with all the games we've had, I was just relieved we'd come through [against Granada]," Solskjaer said. "And, of course, I've watched them but I haven't analysed and haven't seen them in-depth to give them enough respect probably with analysis, which I could have said, which I truly mean.
"It's a fantastic club with a great history, I've actually got two prized possessions back home - a Totti shirt and a (Daniele) de Rossi shirt - I swapped shirts with them, actually signed.
"So I know about the history, I know about the quality, with Chris (Smalling) being there last season, we followed them. Then they signed Chris and we've not watched them as much but we've analysed them down to the ground since we drew them and we are ready for them.
"It was not meant as any disrespect and I think everyone knows that, and I've got loads of respect for them."
