Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer names two new leaders

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is not concerned about the rawness of his attacking options at Manchester United even though they have sold their two most experienced forwards.

Alexis Sanchez, 30, was reunited with Romelu Lukaku, 26, at Inter Milan earlier this week on a 10-month loan deal after United sold Lukaku for £73million.

The departures of Sanchez and Lukaku leave United with eight forwards but three are teenagers and Daniel James only made his Premier League debut last month.

James, 21, has plundered three goals in four games to quickly vindicate United's decision to sign the left winger in the summer and Mason Greenwood, 17, impressed with another cameo at Southampton, where he was denied a winner by Angus Gunn.

Tahith Chong, 19, was an unused substitute at St Mary's and Angel Gomes, who turned 19 on Saturday, scored a superb opener in the Under-23s' Friday night draw with West Ham at Old Trafford.

Jesse Lingard, 26, is the oldest forward in the United squad and was dropped by Solskjaer at Southampton, where United were without the injured Anthony Martial. Marcus Rashford moved to the centre forward's role and was criticised for a wasteful performance but Solskjaer has challenged him and Martial to emerge as leaders in the current squad.

"Both Anthony and Marcus played, I don't know how many games, and have had so many years in this football club and this team," Solskjaer said. "And I expect them to be leading stars.

"Dan James coming in, we don't expect him to score every game he stars and Mason [Greenwood] today was unlucky. We're on the right track."

Martial, 23, made his United debut in September 2015 and it was his hamstring injury in the warm-up against Midtjylland in the February 2016 Europa League tie that allowed Rashford to make his career debut.

Rashford and Martial have scored two goals apiece so far this season. Rashford, 21, was called up to the England squad for the September internationals but Martial was not included in Didier Deschamps's France party.
