Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gives Angel Gomes contract update

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is hopeful Manchester United can persuade Angel Gomes his future lies at the club, after fellow academy graduate Tahith Chong signed a new deal.

Both youngsters were out of contract at the end of this season and had been linked with moves abroad when their Old Trafford deals expire.

But Chong, 20, who had been linked with a move to Inter Milan, ended speculation over his future by penning a new two-year deal earlier this week with the option of an additional year.

Now Solskjaer is hoping 19-year-old Gomes will follow suit and extend his own stay at the club.

Both players have struggled for game time this season but Solskjaer insists they both have the potential to have successful Old Trafford careers.

“With Tahith we’re very happy he sees his future here, we can see a very good player there and we’ll give him time to develop,” said Solskjaer.

“That is the same with Angel. We hope we can convince him in the near future and long term future that he’s a Manchester United player.”

Chong joined United from the Feyenoord academy in 2016 and was included in the 2018 pre-season tour of the United States by former manager Jose Mourinho, who also gave Chong his maiden first-team squad promotion in the Champions League defeat to Juventus at Old Trafford last season. Chong made his debut off the bench in the FA Cup third round win over Reading 14 months ago.

The Netherlands Under-21 international has played 14 times for United but only started on four occasions.

Academy graduates Chong, Mason Greenwood, Brandon Williams, James Garner, and Ethan Laird have all inked new contracts over the last year. Salford-raised Gomes, 19, is approaching the final three months of his contract.
