Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag asked about possible move for Neymar

Erik ten Hag used his stock answer when asked about possible Manchester United interest in Neymar.

The Paris Saint-Germain winger's future is uncertain after another premature Champions League ejection and the Qatari Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani's interest in buying United has sparked links between the club and Neymar.

PSG are owned by Qatar Sports Investment and it has been suggested a Qatari takeover of United would lead to a marquee signing.

United have set aside funds to invest in a centre forward amid interest in Tottenham talisman Harry Kane and Napoli goalscorer Victor Osimhen while Ten Hag is eager to add a young midfielder.

The majority of signings will be dependent on outgoings and figures at United have cast doubt on a move for Neymar. The 31-year-old is under contract at PSG until 2025 and United made a widely-publicised attempt to lure him from Barcelona in 2015.

When Ten Hag was asked about Neymar, he replied: "When we have news we will tell you."

Neymar became the most expensive footballer in history when he joined PSG from Barcelona for £198million in 2017.

United's hit rate with superstar signings in the last 10 years has been appalling. Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao, both signed in 2014, left after a year, Paul Pogba repeatedly attempted to leave during his six years until he ran down his contract and Cristiano Ronaldo's position was untenable after he conducted an unauthorised interview in which he said he had "no respect" for Ten Hag.

Former PSG striker Edinson Cavani regularly opted to miss United games throughout his two-year spell Jadon Sancho has underwhelmed in the two years since he joined from Borussia Dortmund in a £72.9million deal.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic joined United on a free from PSG in 2016 and enjoyed a superb first season, scoring 28 goals, but he struggled to recover from an anterior cruciate ligament injury and only managed seven appearances in his second season at Old Trafford.

Neymar primarily plays on the left wing, where United have Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford to choose from. Garnacho recently signed a new deal until 2028 and Rashford is in discussions over a renewal.
