Manchester United man puts rivalry to one side as he issues gushing praise of Marcelo Bielsa

Departing Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has paid tribute to Marcelo Bielsa following their play-off exit on Wednesday night.

The Spaniard put rivalries aside to praise his former coach after the pair worked together during their spell at Atletico Bilbao.

Manchester United swooped for the midfielder in 2014, a year after Bielsa had departed, sealing a £29m move to Old Trafford.

Herrera, who is expected to sign for Paris Saint-Germain in the coming days after four years at the club, was quick to praise the Argentine chief after Leeds United's devastating defeat, thanking him for his part in moulding him into the player he is today.

Some kind words from the 29-year-old, who clearly believes managers like Bielsa should be cherished whilst they are part of the English game.

The futures of both these two friends are up in the air, with Herrera yet to sign a deal with PSG or another club, whilst Bielsa refused to be drawn on his plans after the Derby County defeat.

It is understood that Leeds have the option to extend his contract and keep him at the club beyond this summer, although Bielsa will also have a big say in what happens next.

It’s clear that Whites supporters would nothing more than to see the Argentine perched on his bucket in the dugout next season after the Leeds United Supporters’ Trust penned an emotional letter asking him to stay at the club.

The heartfelt plea praised the 'inspirational turn around in the quality of football at Elland Road' and highlighted that Bielsa has brought about 'a clear footballing ethos and a truly passionate backroom staff has gone a long way in giving this special club its identity back after years of previous mismanagement.'
