Manchester United make double appointment to first-team staff

Former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher has been appointed to the first-team coaching staff by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Fletcher has been working with United's Under-16s since October, initially joining the club to get experience as he worked his way towards his coaching badges.

But Solskjaer has taken the decision to promote him to a first-team role as he seeks to capitalise on the Scot's experience of life at United and his winning mentality.

Fletcher came through the academy at United and made more than 340 appearances in 13 years as a first-team player, winning five Premier League titles, the Champions League in 2008 and one FA Cup and one League Cup.

Fletcher will join Michael Carrick and Solskjaer as former United players now on the staff and the manager sees that as a positive.

“Darren has the United DNA running through his veins and he knows exactly what it takes to be a Manchester United player," said Solskjaer.

“He is at the start of his coaching career and his experience both on and off the pitch along with his winning mentality, commitment and hard work will be a great addition to the staff.”

Fletcher retired after leaving Stoke City in 2019 and the 36-year-old has done TV work before committing to the coaching path.

“I am delighted to be returning to the club as a first-team coach," he said.

“It’s a very exciting time for this young team and I am looking forward to taking the next steps in my coaching career by working with Ole and his staff.”

United have also appointed Robin Sadler as the club's head of rehabilitation and physiotherapy, overseeing the first-team, academy and women's teams.

Sadler has spent 17 years working at Manchester City and his most recent role was head physio at Derby County.
