Manchester United make decision on Axel Tuanzebe future

Axel Tuanzebe is expected to leave Manchester United on a season-long loan this summer.

Tuanzebe, 23, only played 18 times for United in 2020-21 and three of his four Premier League starts were in May.

The Manchester Evening News understands Tuanzebe feels he deserved more chances last season and received a lack of recognition. Premier League and overseas clubs have expressed interest in Tuanzebe.

Tuanzebe earned widespread acclaim last October for his performance in United's Champions League group stage win at Paris Saint-Germain in what was his first start for a year, but he lined up in just eight more matches.

Tuanzebe's preferred position is at right centre-back but United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has favoured Victor Lindelof as Harry Maguire's partner.

Eric Bailly signed a new three-year contract in April despite another injury-plagued year and was selected ahead of Tuanzebe for the Europa League final. Bailly effectively issued an ultimatum to Solskjaer he would seek a transfer if he was overlooked through an interview with The Times.

Lindelof has struggled for form and Bailly broke the 20 appearances for the first time since his maiden season with United in 2016-17. Phil Jones has not played since January 2020 and is on a longer contract than Tuanzebe.

United want to sign a centre-back this summer amid interest in Raphael Varane and Pau Torres. United attempted to sign Varane from Real Madrid in a £50million package and the Europa League final was viewed by club staff as Torres' 'audition'. Torres excelled in a dour game and was praised by Solskjaer.

Tuanzebe is out of contract at United next year but the club has the option of an additional year. Fellow academy graduate Brandon Williams has also been granted permission to leave on a season-long loan.
