Manchester United make Benjamin Sesko progress after flying out for 'secret' talks in huge transfer twist

Target: Benjamin Sesko - (London Standard)

Manchester United are advancing on a deal to sign Benjamin Sesko after "secret" talks in Germany.

According to widespread reports, RB Leipzig striker Sesko is now United's first-choice striker target this summer and are confident of beating rivals Newcastle to his signature.

United tried and failed with a late move for Viktor Gyokeres, who head coach Ruben Amorim worked with at Sporting, but the striker was only interested in joining Arsenal. He completed his £64million move last week.

After exploring a deal for Ollie Watkins, as reported by The Telegraph, United have settled on Sesko and this week sent a delegation out to Germany to open formal talks with Leipzig.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, reporting for talkSPORT, United's director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, is leading the talks having joined Matt Hargreaves, director of football negotiations.

Battle: Newcastle and Man Utd both want Benjamin Sesko (London Standard)

Newcastle are desperate to land Sesko as their current star striker, Alexander Isak, pushes to join Liverpool.

The Magpies have endured a nightmare transfer window thus far, having been rejected by Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Bryan Mbuemo and Hugo Ekitike. Goalkeeper James Trafford also followed suit by snubbing the club.

But United know they must act fast to land Sesko, despite Sky Germany's reporting that the striker is set to become the sixth player to reject a move to Newcastle this summer as he favours a move to Old Trafford.

United, the report adds, will look to sell both Jadon Sancho and Alejandro Garnacho to help fund a move for Sesko, which is expected to cost more than £60m.
