Manchester United loanee Chris Smalling sets himself challenge ahead of Roma debut

Chris Smalling says he wants to prove that Roma made the 'right choice' to sign him on loan in the summer transfer window.

The English defender left Manchester United on a season-long loan last week as he goes in search of first-team football after falling down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

MEN Sport understand there was interest from AC Milan and Fiorentina for the 29-year-old but he opted for a move to Roma once an official approach was made.

Smalling was on the bench last weekend as Roma drew with Lazio in the Rome derby, but he could make his debut next week when his side travel to face SPAL in Serie A.

There will be plenty of intrigue as to how Smalling settles in Italy and he is determined to prove any doubters wrong with a successful spell at Roma.

"I'm not a young player who necessarily needs to prove himself," Smalling said.

"But I love to have new challenges and I had a great time in Manchester. I think the opportunity to experience a new league, to experience it at a big club like Roma. I don't like to live my life with regrets.

"I think to be able to experience this with Roma and the expectations. In Manchester we have high expectations, and with Roma they are equally as big. So it is not an easy challenge, but is is a challenge that I'm willing to accept and I'm very happy that the cub has given me the chance.

"It is time for me to prove that they made the right choice."
