Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney favourite to become Everton manager as Rafa Benitez is sacked

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has been labelled the favourite by the bookies to become the next Everton manager.

The odds have been released after the Merseyside club sacked Rafa Benitez this afternoon.

Everton's owners called an emergency boardroom meeting after the Toffees lost 2-1 to Norwich City at Carrow Road on Saturday.

Defeat left Benitez's side six points above the drop zone and spelt the end to his time at Goodison Park.

Oddschecker has compiled the odds for who will take over from the former Newcastle manager in the blue half of Liverpool.

Rooney has been placed as the overwhelming favourite for the position at odds of 6/5.

The 36-year-old started his footballing career at Everton and grew up supporting the club.

He is currently doing a brilliant job at Derby County in the Championship where yesterday his side moved off the bottom of the table with a 2-0 victory over Sheffield United - this is despite the Rams being deducted 21 points this season.

Rooney is not the only United name being linked to the job this afternoon.

Michael Carrick is priced at 16/1, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is 25/1 along with Jose Mourinho, Ruud van Nistelrooy is 33/1, Steve Bruce is 66/1 and Roy Keane is an even longer shot at 75/1.
