Manchester United legend Roy Keane reveals the one regret from his professional playing career

Roy Keane has revealed his regret from asking Matthias Sammer to swap shirts in pre-World Cup friendly in 1994.

The no-nonsense midfielder has made his views clear on Manchester United players in the past and one of his gripes is shirt-swapping between footballers.

And he has now opened up about the time he tried to grab a match souvenir from the former Ballon d'Or winner prior to the 1994 World Cup.

But to Keane's dismay, the former Borussia Dortmund star turned down an opportunity to swap with the Republic of Ireland international, which he has admitted that he regrets and didn't do for the remainder of his career.

"I've asked one player to swap a jersey, which I regret when I played Germany with Ireland. Once to swap a player for Germany, pre-94 World Cup," he said speaking on Gary Neville's The Overlap.

"It was the sweeper, Sammer. He said, "No" and I went, '****'

"He was polite, but if I really wanted to swap with somebody, it probably would have been Zidane. After that, I just went 'do you know what it is, it's stupid swapping shirts.'

"Zidane is a brilliant player and after the Madrid game we were walking up the tunnel together; he was looking at me, and I was thinking he'd probably ask me for my shirt. But no, I'm glad we didn't swap shirts, and that was the other time I thought, 'will I, won't I' and I've gone, 'no, leave it.'"
